Blocking ICE gene may pave way for drug treatment, suggests study.
TUESDAY, Oct. 23 (HealthScoutNews) -- Patients with fiery bowel flare-ups may one day find relief in a block of ICE.
ICE, the abbreviation for the interleukin-1beta-converting enzyme, spurs the formation of chemicals that aggravate the lining of the intestine in ulcerative colitis. A new study shows that blocking the enzyme in mice can reduce the symptoms of gastric inflammation of both acute and chronic ulcerative colitis. The findings appear in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
